- triple glazed windows ... 50% less heat loss compared to typical double glazed windows and two layers of "low-E" that allows winter sun to enter while reflecting summer sun. Consider that most heat loss/gain in a house is through the windows this is a significant difference

- upgraded insulation in walls and ceilings ... R-40 in the walls and R-80 in the ceiling

- wood fired water furnace heats radiant floors and domestic hot water ... this uses 10 face cords of firewood each winter season and needs to be filled once or twice a day depending on the outside temperature

- 8 solar panels and 2 banks of 4 deep cell batteries and back up propane generator is fully automated by the inverter. It starts the generator when required (on cloudy days) and shuts it off when the batteries are charged

- ICF foundation on bedrock ... stands for "Insulated Concrete forms" and is rated at R-40 plus by being anchored to the bedrock there is no movement or settling ever

- HRV ventilation system ... "heat recovery ventilator" removes stale indoor air and pre-heats incoming fresh air, plus the  fresh air intake pipe runs for 75 feet under ground before entering so that it uses the ground temp to pre-heat the incoming fresh air in winter and cools it in summer
