Ancestral house in brick and wood, nicknamed «Red Brick House», dating from 1881. Its front overlooks the Beach road, which borders the sea. The St. Lawrence River is here as the sea because its width exceeds 55 km and the water is salty. A small path in the woods, facing the house, leads to the sea in 2 minutes on foot. It is also an 11-minute drive from the Reford Gardens.
From the large cedar veranda or from the large balcony on the second floor, one sees and hears the sea and rocks overflown with birds. The house is elevated, which protects it from the sea, despite the proximity. Being on the other side of Beach also protects it from the cold and the winds sometimes very present at the seaside.
It is located in the English part of the village of Métis-sur-Mer, Metis Beach section, named after the old village. It was built by the Astle family, which gave its name to the street. The village of Métis-sur-Mer is part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Quebec. It is a holiday resort, which, despite its 600 inhabitants, has 2 golf courses, including the magnificent Cascade Golf & Tennis Club.
The house, like most houses in Metis Beach, was built for the summer holidays. But it is now isolated for the 4 seasons. Its insulation was made without breaking the exterior or interior, by means of insulation blown into the walls. Old walls are preserved, old doors, locks and handles, some fixtures, and original wood floors, pine on the ground floor, and wide spruce on the second floor. The foundations of the brick part are of stone. All the important elements have been renovated or modernized in keeping with the old style of the house: electricity, plumbing, roofing, windows.
Its fairly large terrain is sloping, with hundred-year-old lilacs, blue and white hydrangeas, a few azaleas and rhododendrons, many wildflowers and fruit trees. The house has for neighbor a small park for young children, where one reaches by the courtyard of side. Most of the other neighbors have had their homes for several generations and live there only in the summer.
Note: the description indicates 3 bedrooms, but the boudoir and the double family room can be transformed into a bedroom, for a total of 6 bedrooms.
